The art program at Upper Iowa University challenges students to develop a personal approach to the arts while they strengthen artistic skills and explore career opportunities. Creativity and independence are cornerstones of a program where faculty members actively lead, motivate, and support students in their education, personal lives, and careers. The natural beauty of Northeastern Iowa forms a backdrop that inspires students to better understand themselves and what it means to be human. This combination of personal expression, professional guidance, and stimulating natural environment contribute to a unique atmosphere of interaction and collaboration where students and their ideas can flourish.
Introductory courses provide a solid foundation engaging students of all disciplines in visual discourse. Advanced courses hone technical, conceptual and research skills while developing a higher level of critical thinking and understanding.
A degree in art prepares students to pursue the following career paths:
Art Therapy - designed to prepare students to enter an accredited master’s degree program in art therapy. Art Therapy can be used to resolve emotional conflict by fostering self-awareness and personal growth through education, rehabilitation and psychotherapy.
Studio Arts and Art Education - The BA in Art at UIU provides a base for the pursuit of a master in art or a master in fine arts degree. These degrees allow artists to teach in higher education or develop as a professional artist with their own studios. The preparation of portfolios and advice about graduate school options is part of this emphasis.
Architecture - The architecture pre-professional program is designed to prepare students to enter an accredited master’s degree program.
The world’s artists and art galleries offer profound learning opportunities. The UIU art program regularly offers an art and architecture tour of Italy during the May term. Many individualized art study abroad opportunities also are available.
