Upper Iowa University offers pre-approved coursework required for completion of the Wisconsin Social Work Training Certificate (SWTC). SWTC courses can be completed as part of a UIU Bachelor of Science degree major in Human Services, Criminal Justice, or Psychology, or as a non-degree seeking student issued an active training certificate by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).
Social Work Training Certificate Curriculum
Upper Iowa University’s courses are approved by the state of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). The approved coursework includes:
- HSV 383 Human Behavior in the Social Environment
- HSV 384 Social Welfare Programs and Policies
- HSV 391 Social Work Practice I: Individuals
- HSV 392 Social Work Practice II: Families and Groups
- HSV 393 Social Work Practice III: Communities and Social Institutions
- HSV 403 Internship – 9 credits
Completion of a degree, coursework or internship does not guarantee issuance of a SWTC by the state of Wisconsin. Additional information about Wisconsin state requirements related to the Social Work Training Certificate may be found at the DSPS website

A Social Worker Training Certificate (SWTC) may be issued by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services after degree completion. UIU majors of Criminal Justice, Human Services, or Psychology who wish to work in Wisconsin for an agency, institution or organization in a social work capacity may apply. Non-degree-seeking students planning to work in Wisconsin who have completed a human services related major or majors in criminal justice, psychology or sociology and wish to work in Wisconsin in a social work capacity may also be considered to receive a SWTC by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services.
