Upper Iowa University is a proud military friendly school and we continue to look for way to help service members meet their academic goals. Upper Iowa University matches the $250 tuition assistance rate for all graduate and undergraduate courses.

Coverage amounts and monetary limits

The Tuition Assistance Program may fund up to 100% of your college tuition and certain fees with the following limits:

  • Not to exceed $250 per semester credit hour or $166 per quarter credit hour
  • Not to exceed $4,500 per fiscal year, Oct. 1 through Sept. 30*

Air Force

U.S Air Force Tuition Assistance

Air Force and Space Force Requirements and Limitations

The Air Force TA program currently pays 100 percent of tuition up to $250 per semester hour and $166 quarter hour up to $4,500 annually for off-duty courses with accredited schools who have signed the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding in pursuit of approved degree programs.

All TA Funding Requests must be approved by supervisors, via the Air Force Virtual Education Center (AFVEC), and fall within the TA application window of 45 calendar days prior to, and no later than 7 calendar days before, the term start date. Any TA not “supervisor” approved by prescribed start dates will be auto-deleted and a notification sent to the prospective student. Additionally, no more than 124 semester hours (186 quarter hours) for a bachelor’s degree and 42 SH (70 QH) for a graduate degree will be funded by MilTA.

A successful course completion is defined as a final grade of “C” or higher for undergraduate courses, and “B” or higher for graduate courses (“Pass” for “Pass/Fail”). Reimbursement is initiated when grades of “D” or “F” in undergraduate courses, and “C”,”D” or “F” in graduate courses are reported.

There is a mandatory requirement to maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 (“C” average) or above for undergraduate, and 3.0 (“B” average) for graduate level.

Steps to get started 

Search and register for classes by following the steps outlined below.

  1. Start by first visiting with Military Education Counselor or Education Services Officer for initial TA counseling.
  2. Go to the Air Force Virtual Education Center and view Upper Iowa University courses https://afvec.us.af.mil/afvec/public/welcome 
  3. Apply for admission  to Upper Iowa University.
  4. Register for courses through your UIU Academic Advisor.
  5. Apply and submit Air Force Tuition Assistance Forms. When asked for Upper Iowa University’s OPEID, enter 00189300. Please keep in mind that TA Authorization can be submitted 45 days before the first day of class but must be submitted no later than 7 days prior to the first day of class.
  6. Once your TA is approved, email a copy to your UIU Academic Advisor for processing.

There is no application fee for Upper Iowa University.

Note: When enrolling in a course, please be sure to complete your tuition assistance form within the Air Force Virtual Education Center and send it to your Academic Advisor for processing.

AU- ABC Air University- Associate-to-Baccalaureate Cooperative 

The Air University Associate-to-Baccalaureate Cooperative (AU-ABC) is a partnership between the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and selected academic institutions. The AU-ABC program identifies degree pathways for current CCAF student and CCAF graduates to transition into bachelor degrees with maximum transferability of credits.

Upper Iowa University has partnered with Air University’s to offer general education courses online for Air and Space Force personnel who want to complete their CCAF Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree requirements. More information at uiu.edu/AU-ABC

GEM-General Education Mobile 

The GEM program is a partnership between the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) and selected academic institutions. The program offers the 15 semester hour cluster of General Education courses required for the award of the A.S. degree of the CCAF.

The partnership enables CCAF students to complete their General Education requirements as a single block, from a single institution creating academic continuity and faster completion of the Associate degree.

Upper Iowa University has partnered with GEM to offer general education courses online for Air and Space Force personnel who want to complete their CCAF Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree requirements. More information at uiu.edu/gem

Army

ArmyIgnitED Step by Step Guide 

  1. Start by first visiting with Army Education Counselor for “Initial TA Counseling” if needed.
  2. Complete UIU application for admission
  3. Create a student user account at the ArmyIgnitED portal and click Get Started. This process includes creating both a Login.gov and ArmyIgnited®️ account and you must use your military email.
  4. Create an educational path and select Upper Iowa University as your educational institution. If you will be taking online classes with UIU please selection- “Upper Iowa University-Main” as your campus. Reach out to your UIU academic advisor to select the educational path that matches your chosen UIU major.
  5. Meet with an Army Education Counselor for initial TA counseling if you have not already completed this.
  6. Work with your UIU academic advisor on upcoming sessions and to register for classes.
  7. Log into the ArmyIgnitED portal to request tuition assistance. If you are taking online classes, please select “Upper Iowa University- Main” as your campus.
  8. Once you confirm courses for TA, two things can happen.
    1. If you have a degree plan uploaded into ArmyIgnitED then the TA request should be automatically approved and a TA confirmation will come to UIU (see more below)
    2. If you do not have a degree plan uploaded into ArmyIgnitED then the courses will be sent to an Army Education Counselor for approval.
  9. You will received an approved Tuition Assistance request in your ArmyIgntiED portal with two digital signatures. Please provide this approved TA voucher to your UIU advisor for confirmation of payment.

The ArmyIgnitED process is intensive and currently very time consuming. It can take up to 5 business days for a student to get through the process in some cases. Students are encouraged to register as early as possible to allow time for processing.

Students registering the in the final days leading up to a session start should be made aware that their TA confirmation may not be processed in time to start the session.

CEDP program 

The CEDP program is an Army initiative which identifies degree paths which align with Army training outcomes to help promote and develop exceptional leaders within the Army and across the globe.

Field Artillery Partnership (CEDP)

Upper Iowa University partnership with Field Artillery specifically for all 13MOS series soldiers. The Field Artillery identified Upper Iowa University’s Associates in Arts in Liberal Art as degrees to align with the 13MOS series. Upper Iowa University will coordinate with your military obligations to fit a quality higher education into your busy life.

Benefits of the Partnership
  • You can transfer a combination of military training/education, and college credits for a maximum of 45 credits towards and Associate’s degree and 90 credits towards a Bachelor’s degree. A minimum of 15 credits for an Associate’s degree and 30 credits for a Bachelor’s degree MUST be completed at UIU either online or at a location.
  • We match your Tuitions Assistance (TA) rate and we accept the Montgomery GI Bill®, all Veteran Chapters, FAFSA, and we are committed to helping you attain your degree.

  • No Entrance exams required for military Servicemembers. See Admission section for other requirements
  • Six convenient start date throughout the year with 8-week classes and an accelerated 6-week summer session.
  • You take classes based on what best fits YOUR schedule: classes can be taken online, at a regional education center, through distance learning and interchanged as necessary.
  • You can take an average of 2 courses to keep you on schedule and get you to graduation sooner.

Majors Offered as part of the CEDP Partnership Field Artillery partnership degree

You can get information on any of the following majors from UIU and still receive maximum transfer credits. Some are available at the regional education centers and others are available as online courses. Many students blend their degree plan, by taking some face-to-face courses and some online courses. Check with your Academic Advisor for more details about any of these programs.

Army National Guard

NCPACE- Self-Paced via Mail 

The UIU-Self-Paced via Mail program provides a means for you to continue your education while at sea or on deployment when internet service is not available.

This program offers courses at the undergraduate level. This program offers 67 unique class, three Bachelor’s degrees options, and three Associate degree options.

Spouses and Dependents

Military Family Grant

UIU offers the Military Family Grant (MFG) for the spouses and dependents of active duty, reserve and National Guard Service Members. The MFG provides a $250 tuition rate for undergraduate courses and a $325 tuition rate for all graduate level course.

Transfer Credits for Military Services

Our articulation agreement means you can easily see how your credits through Military: Army & Navy (ACE credits) match up at Upper Iowa University. You can transfer up to 78 credits from ACE credits to get started on your UIU degree.
