Graduate Admissions

To be eligible for UIU’s Master of Arts in Psychology program, students must meet the following requirements:

• A baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by an agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Post-secondary Education (USDEOPE) or by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). (If from a foreign institution, an English translation and evaluation must accompany the record.)
• GPA or GRE/GMAT score:
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better in undergraduate degree, or
  •  3.00 GPA or better in a minimum of 6 semester hours of graduate credit
  •  For MBA, MPA and MSA, an acceptable GRE or GMAT score. An acceptable score is 1090 for GRE, 308 for GRE revised General Test, or 550 for GMAT. An official GRE/ GMAT transcript, which is only available for five years following completion of the GMAT or GRE must be submitted directly to Upper Iowa University. • Verification of English language proficiency requirements.
• International students must provide proof of financial responsibility. Contact advisor for more information.
• If minimum GPA or GRE/GMAT not met, additional documentation will be requested by the graduate program chair for further consideration.
  • Two letters of recommendation, resume or curriculum vitae, and essay.

To be eligible for our MBA degree program, students must:

• Have a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by an agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Post-secondary Education (USDE-OPE) or by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). If your degree is from a non-U.S. institution, you’ll need an English translation or evaluation of your transcript.
• Have at least a 2.75 GPA in their undergraduate coursework or a 3.0 on the most recent 60 semester credits of undergraduate work. Minimum GPA may vary by program.
  • Many factors go into an admissions decision. Earning the minimum GPA does not guarantee admission to Upper Iowa, and students with a lower GPA may still be considered.
• Provide official transcripts from the college/university where the baccalaureate degree was conferred. If you have earned graduate-level credit at another institution, provide those transcripts for transfer opportunities. Transcripts must be submitted directly from the granting institution—they cannot pass through your hands.
• Submit documentation of English proficiency, if an international student.
• Graduate students may also submit GRE or GMAT scores.

Applicants to the Master of Science in Counseling must also provide:

• Two letters of recommendation from references: Your references will be contacted directly by UIU and asked to independently upload their letters. References can be employers, internship/volunteer supervisors, faculty, mentors or leaders in your community. Don’t include family members, supervisees, clients or personal counselors. References can speak to your:
  1.  Academic ability or potential for graduate study
  2. Experience in the helping professions (volunteer or employed)
  3. Character
  4. Experience with individuals whose background differs from yours
• A personal statement written by you: Your personal statement must be 1-2 pages, 12-pt. font and double-spaced. It should cover the following topics:
  1. How your educational and work experiences have contributed to your readiness for counselor education.
  2. Your reason for pursuing a master’s degree in counseling.
  3. What inspired you to do so at this point in your life.
  4. What experiences have shaped your beliefs about diversity, multiculturalism, social justice and people’s capacity for change.
  5. Your professional goals and how a UIU Master’s Degree in Counseling can help you accomplish them.
• Video interview: Once we’ve reviewed your application and required materials, we’ll contact applicants who have been selected to move on in the process. The next step is an online video interview with you and a small group of counseling faculty members. The interview should last about 45-60 minutes.
