Despite uncertain weather conditions, volunteers successfully completed 29 of the 30 planned service projects. Efforts spanned the community, with participants assisting residents with yard work, preparing public spaces for seasonal use, and supporting local organizations.
Projects included enhancements at Rainbow Land Preschool and Daycare and Maple Crest Manor, preparation of the Fayette Community Garden, and cleanup efforts along the Volga River. Volunteers also helped ready Harms-Eischeid Stadium and Dorman Gymnasium for upcoming commencement activities.
Additional service efforts included organizing the Fayette Food Pantry, cleaning and restoring the Fayette Opera House, cleaning the Fayette Community Library, clearing debris from parks, trails, and the local cemetery, and beautifying downtown storefronts. Participants also collected litter along a two-mile stretch of Highway 150 and planted 10 trees throughout the community.
In addition to outdoor service projects, one volunteer group assembled 100 birthday cake kits to support families in Fayette and surrounding communities.
“Fayette Appreciation Day reflects the strong connection between Upper Iowa University and the community it calls home,” said Danielle Rosario Cushion, Assistant Vice President of Student Life at UIU. “This annual event demonstrates the collective impact of our students, faculty, and staff when they come together in service.”
Fayette Appreciation Day continues to serve as a meaningful opportunity for the University community to give back while fostering a spirit of collaboration and civic responsibility.
