UIU to celebrate MLK Day and Black History month

FAYETTE, Iowa (January 6, 2011) – Upper Iowa University will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on its Fayette campus on Monday, January 17. The program will begin at 4 p.m. in the East Café for all students, faculty, and staff, with refreshments in the Upper Iowa Fayette Rooms immediately following. The general public is also invited.
Junior Cierra Sago, Chicago, Ill., and sophomore Dejon Creeks, Houston, Texas, will serve as masters of ceremonies, as well as sing several spirituals during the program. In addition to comments from UIU President Alan G. Walker, guest speaker will be Dr. Jerlando F.L. Jackson from the University of Wisconsin. Sophomore Cody Northern, Cedar Rapids, will give excerpts from Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Jerlando F. L. Jackson is an associate professor of higher and postsecondary education in educational leadership and policy analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also serves as the coordinator for the higher, postsecondary and continuing education program, and a faculty affiliate for the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education. Additionally, he serves as director of Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei Lab). Jackson’s central research interest has been to explore workforce diversity and workplace discrimination in higher education. He is credited with over 90 publications, 125 presentations, and has published several books, including his latest, Introduction to American Higher Education.
A full schedule of events planned in honor of Black History month will be posted on Upper Iowa University’s website at www.uiu.edu on January 31. The public is invited to attend any or all of these events.
