VA Educational Benefits: What to Expect

  • Learn and compare education programs and benefits at Vets.gov.  Please note that your file number is your social security number.
  • Upon application, VA educational benefit processing takes eight to ten weeks. The VA will send a series of letters including a Certificate of Eligibility and an Award Letter that will indicate the dates of the semester and your rate of payment to expect for the semester. Communicate any updates or changes to your school certifying official.
  • If you are under Chapter 1606, 1607 (REAP) or Chapter 30, you must verify your attendance each month to receive payment. Verify attendance online at WAVE or by calling 877-823-2378.
  • You must notify the school certifying official via email of any change to your program or enrollment. Each center has a school certifying official.  The school certifying official for online, self paced or Fayette campus enrollment is the Veterans Benefits Specialist.
  • Monthly Housing Allowance (Chapter 33) and Educational Assistance Allowance (Chapter 30, 35, 1606 and 1607) is prorated by the number of days in the month. If your classes start later than the first of the month or end before the last day of the month, your payment will be prorated by the actual number of days in classes.
  • Withdrawing from courses could result in a debt with the VA unless mitigating circumstances are present.  Failure to attend must be reported to the VA and may result in a debt with the VA. If you have questions, please contact your school certifying official.
  • VA educational benefits pay for the completion of degree programs; thus, only courses required for a student’s degree will be certified for benefit payment.  Repeat courses may not be covered by VA educational benefits. Confirm with the school certifying official prior to registering.
  • VA payments and your student account should be monitored each session to ensure VA compliance and accuracy.  If you have questions, please contact your school certifying official and student financial services.
  • Your grades do matter.  The VA will be notified of academic probation and could result in suspension of entitlement.  Seek assistance from your academic advisor and other academic resources
