The UIU Tutor Center, located on the 2nd floor of Henderson-Wilder library, is managed by Markus Hawes. Along with the Tutor Center Manager, there are several peer tutors working in the Tutor Center who are available to help in a variety of contents, including but not limited to: Accounting, Business, Education, Math, Physics, and Science. The Tutor Center Manager also oversees the Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Program. PAL Leaders arrange study sessions for students outside of class. PAL Leaders help meet the needs of students in specific classes (ex: Biology), whereas peer tutors help meet the needs of any student in specific contents (ex: all science).
The goal of Upper Iowa University’s Tutor Center is to provide professional and peer tutors who strengthen students’ skills, support students’ diverse learning styles, and provide resources and tools necessary to promote students’ academic success during their career at Upper Iowa. We strive to help students develop skills necessary to become independent learners. We will maintain a welcoming and supportive environment and encourage students to use all available resources (ie: tutoring services, assistance from professors, support from other staff members, collaboration with peers, etc.) to maximize their potential for success.
Scientific calculators (TI-30 XIIS) and graphing calculators (TI-83) are also available through the Tutor Center. Calculators can be checked out on a per-term basis, and renewed per-term as necessary. Graphing calculators are reserved for students in the calculus series or above.
