Dean Edward Huffstetler, Ph.D.
FAYETTE, Iowa (January 20, 2016) – A University of Iowa graduate has been named dean of Upper Iowa University’s School of Liberal Arts. Edward Huffstetler, Ph.D., most recently served as associate dean for academic affairs at Bridgewater College, a private, four-year liberal arts college in Bridgewater, Va.
“Upper Iowa University is a school known for being deeply committed to the practical benefits of the liberal arts, a cause I am passionate about and have spent my career promoting and defending,” said Huffstetler, who assumed his duties on the Fayette campus Monday, Jan. 18. “I believe Upper Iowa is similar to Bridgewater College in many ways, especially in its commitment to the liberal arts and in its comprehensive, vibrant approach to the college experience. I'm certainly looking forward to working with the many interesting, thoughtful people I met during the search process and the entire UIU family.”
“The selection of Dr. Huffstetler is the result of a nationwide search for a successor to former dean, John Siblik,” explained UIU Provost Dr. Kurt Wood. “The selection committee was very pleased with the quality of candidates to consider and is especially pleased that Dr. Huffstetler has accepted the position. He brings both academic and administrative strengths to UIU. At this time, I also want to thank interim Dean Doug McReynolds for his leadership of the School of Liberal Arts over the past several months.”
Huffstetler earned a doctorate at the University of Iowa in 1988. His area of study is American literature, primarily literature of the 19th century, with a special concentration in American Indian literature and studies. Among his published works are a small collection of traditional American Indian stories, a novel as well as several short stories.
Huffstetler’s teaching experience includes employment as a visiting professor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., professor of English and American literature at Bridgewater College, and as a part time instructor of English at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids and the University of Iowa.
Prior to his duties as Bridgewater’s associate dean, Huffstetler served as the college’s director of the general education program, director of the personal development portfolio program, and director of academic advising.
The South Carolina native has spent the last 28 years residing in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. He and his wife, Dr. Catherine L. Elick, have three adult children.
