Upper Iowa University offers summer STEM camp
FAYETTE, Iowa (March 27, 2015) – Upper Iowa University is offering a summer STEM camp to provide opportunities to learn more about science, technology, and math opportunities in college and the importance of STEM careers.
The camp is offered 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 17-19 on the UIU campus in Fayette. All students in sixth through ninth grade are eligible to enroll in the three-day campus. Fee is $60.
William Jones, UIU assistant professor of biology and camp coordinator, said each day of the camp will focus on a specific science area. In “Microbiology/Molecular Biology,” campers will learn about microbes and how to isolate DNA. In “Protein Chemistry,” campers will explore the types and amounts of protein in various foods; and in “Cyber Camp,” campers will learn about computer programming and how robots can help solve problems.
“STEM careers are among the fastest growing fields in the United States with a wide range of opportunities,” Jones added. “Increasing the number of STEM workers is a national priority. The United States has fallen behind where it matters – the supply of high technology workers and the creativity and innovation they bring. Workers in STEM careers generate new ideas and launch new companies, which sustains economic growth and drives economic stability.”
“Becoming interested in a STEM field now, motivates young students to select a science or math major in college and to make choices that will benefit them throughout their careers. Attending the UIU STEM camp will give participants a taste of what college life is like and may help demonstrate an interest in science and math on their future college applications,” Jones said.
Registration deadline is April 24. For more information about UIU STEM camp, contact Jones at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 563-425-5903.
