VA Education Benefits: What to Expect

  • Learn and compare education programs and benefits at https://www.va.gov/education. Please note that your file number is your social security number (Exception: Chapter 35).
  • Upon application receipt, VA educational benefit processing takes on average 30 days. Via USPS, the VA will mail student directly their VA Education Benefits Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Communicate any updates or changes to your School Certifying Official (SCO).
  • If you are under Chapter 1606, Chapter 1607 or Chapter 30, you are responsible to verify your attendance each month to receive payment. Verify attendance online at WAVE or by calling 877-823-2378.
  • You must notify the SCO via email of any change to your program or enrollment. Each center has an SCO.  The SCO for online, self-paced and Fayette campus enrollments is the Veterans Benefits Specialist.
  • Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is prorated by the number of days in the month. If your classes start later than the first of the month or end before the last day of the month, your payment will be prorated by the actual number of days in classes.
  • Withdrawing from some or all of your courses could result in a debt with the VA unless mitigating circumstances are present.  Failure to attend must be reported to the VA and may result in a debt with the VA. If you have questions, please contact your SCO.
  • VA education benefits pay for the completion of degree programs; thus, only courses required for a student’s degree will be certified for benefit payment.  Repeat courses may not be covered by VA education benefits. Confirm with your Academic Advisor prior to registering.
  • Student should monitor their VA payments and UIU Student Account each session to ensure VA compliance and accuracy.  If you have questions, please contact the VA Education Call Center (1-888-442-4551), your SCO and/or UIU Student Financial Services, as applicable.
  • Your grades do matter.  The VA will be notified of academic probations and suspensions, which may result in suspension of entitlement.  Seek assistance from your Academic Advisor and other UIU Academic Resources.
