Each year you must fully complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Electronic filing is available on the Web at www.fafsa.gov. Please contact the Financial Aid Office with questions regarding completing your FAFSA.
Upper Iowa University's Financial Aid Office has staff members who can assist you in understanding your financial aid, budgeting your resources, and loan management. You are encouraged to contact our office when you need help at 1-800-553-4150. Other services provided by the Financial Aid Office include assessing eligibility for financial aid, awarding aid, and recommending and processing Federal Direct Stafford Loans.
A Pell grant is a federal grant available to students who have "financial need" as determined by the Student Aid Report. Funded by the federal government, Federal Pell Grants range from $598 to $5,815 per year for U.S. citizens, or eligible noncitizens, who are enrolled at least half time. To apply for the Federal Pell Grant, learners must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Upper Iowa University (UIU) offers self-paced correspondence courses as an option for students pursuing a college education. These courses are offered through UIU's Self-Paced Degree Program (SPDP). A correspondence course is a home-study course under which UIU provides instructional material, including examinations on the material to students who are not physically attending classes in a UIU classroom. Correspondence courses are self-paced. When you complete a portion of the instructional materials, examinations are provided that relate to that portion of the material.
Once UIU has your FAFSA, we will notify students via email for documentation necessary to complete the financial aid file with our office. The email will direct you to Net Partner. This virtual online access provides important information, including downloadable forms, award eligibility, disbursement dates, and other important information in regards to your financial aid. Students who wish to opt out of electronic transactions and receive paper notifications must contact the financial aid office for further instruction. Email notifications are sent once your file is complete which include important award information. You are required to accept or decline sought awarded eligibility. You may accept or decline any portion of a financial aid offer without affecting any other awarded eligibility. Awards that are declined will not be replaced with other aid sources.
The Federal Direct Student Loan Program includes both subsidized (need-based) and unsubsidized (not based on financial need) loans. You may have either loan type or a combination on your award letter. To qualify for a Federal Direct Student Loan, a student must file a FAFSA, be accepted to the university, admitted to a degree program, be enrolled at least half-time, receive an award letter listing the loan and accept the loan via Net Partner.
Yes, students can charge their books against their financial aid and obtain a Book Charge code if they meet the following criteria:
- Are registered for courses for the upcoming term.
- Have a completed financial aid file.
- Have an accepted award via Net Partner.
Students who are eligible for a book charge code will receive an email via their peacocks email. Students must purchase textbooks through the UIU Bookstore to utilize the book charge code option. Students who choose to use the book charge ID option will have the textbook charges added to the balance due for the term and the charges will be deducted from any funds that are applied to their student account before any overpayment of funds is released via BankMobile Disbursements.
In order to be considered independent for federal and state purposes for the 2016-2017 academic year, you must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be born before January 1, 1993
- Be a veteran of the US Armed Forces
- Currently serving active duty in the U.S. Armed Services other than training
- Be married
- Be an orphan or ward of the court
- Have legal dependents other than a spouse that receive half of their support from you between 7/1/16 & 6/30/17
- Been adopted at the age of 13 or older
For students who have completed their financial aid files, received and accepted an award package, and have requested loan funds two weeks prior to the start of the term, funding will be credited to your student by the end of the second week of the semester once enrollment and attendance have been verified. Failure to complete the borrower entrance counseling and/or the Direct Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) will result in the delay in the release of funds. Funding will be used toward charges incurred on the bill.
Eligibility is awarded with the assumption that the student will be enrolled full-time. If a student is enrolled less than full-time awards will be adjusted for less than full-time enrollment. Once the account balance is paid in full, any excess funds will be sent to Higher One for student access beginning the third week of the semester.
Tuition and other fees are set by the Board of Trustees each year. The charges for 16-17 are determined by which academic program and location that you are enrolled in. View tuition costs for the 2016-2017 academic year.
UIU contracts with Higher One to offer the Blue Peacock Card for student overpayments. This card may be used like a debit card. Higher One sends an email or text to eligible students when financial aid funds have been applied to this card and are available for use. There are other options through Higher One for overpayments, if a student does not want to use the Blue Peacock Card.
12. If I need to withdraw from all my classes the first term of the semester (i.e. terms 1, 3, 5) due to unforeseen circumstances, but want to return for the courses I am registered for in the second half of the semester (i.e. terms 2, 4, 6), what should I do? Also, how will this affect my financial aid?
You must indicate your plans to return by completing the Intent to Return form within 7 days of completely withdrawing from all classes the first term of the semester. If you do not return the form within 7 days of your withdrawal decision, your scheduled courses will be deleted for the second half of the semester and the Financial Aid Office will perform a return of Title IV funds calculation for your complete withdrawal. Financial aid is disbursed for the semester, therefore, this calculation and adjustment could create a balance due on your student account.
When you complete the Intent to Return Form to indicate your intentions to return within the semester, you will still be considered as enrolled for the semester. This means that your registration and financial aid eligibility will not be cancelled. A financial aid adjustment will be made for the courses dropped in the start of the semester.
