Tom Jordan, Ph.D.

Professor Jordan received his Ph.D. in English from SUNY Binghamton in 2011, where he was awarded the University’s distinguished dissertation award in the humanities. He came to Upper Iowa in 2013 and primarily teaches introductory composition and American literature courses within the Department of English. Dr. Jordan has also designed and taught classes on disability studies and culture and race in American literature and film at UIU.

Dr. Jordan’s research focuses on representations of disability in American literature and popular culture. He has published essays in The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal, Disability Studies Quarterly, and The Explicator, among other places.

Literature is both a record of a people’s past and a potentially imaginative departure from it. In the classroom, I encourage students to read carefully and critically—approaching texts in novel ways, attentive to detail and nuance and skeptical of flawed or limited reasoning—but also creatively—imagining new paradigms for knowledge production, new ways of understanding, and more humane ways for framing public debate.
