I teach developmental and 100 level math classes. It brings great joy when a student understands a topic they felt they could never learn. Seeing the smiles on students faces when they understand is rewarding.

Although I do not teach the upper level classes and work with students who are majoring in mathematics there is great value added to any degree that includes mathematics. Being aware of where data comes from and how it is used will help students to become better citizens.

I worked in business prior to coming to UIU as a student. I came to college when the economy was bad. I was a non-traditional student with 3 children and working on the family farm. This helps be relate to students who are in the same situation as I was.

When I was in college, I had great math professors who helped me to become a successful student. I was 13 years out of high school and took PreCalculus which meant I spent lots of “quality time” with Mr. Drake relearning all the math I had forgotten from high school. I try to emulate the passion Mr. Drake and Dr. Janeke had when teaching mathematics.
