While this is the first year we are riding as members of Team Peacock, we are no strangers to RAGBRAI. We love biking and experiencing the week-long ride all across Iowa. We are raising funds to support military veterans, and dependents with their studies at UIU.

Jake Bass '14
UIU Cabby Dean's Fund: Sand Volleyball Courts
$789.09 raised / $750 goal

I am an Upper Iowa University graduate of the class of 2014. I received my undergraduate in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Mathematics. Currently, I am pursuing my Master's in Education. In addition to being an alum and student at UIU, I also work as the Coordinator of Student Activities here on the Fayette Campus.

I traveled all the way from Perris, California to become a Peacock and to play on the football team, but I quickly fell in love with the education program, Fayette and student activities. I am looking forward to continuing my peacock education and gaining memorable experiences along the way. I am always looking to help others as long as I can have fun doing it, these Sand Volleyball Courts will be a perfect FUN addition to the Fayette Campus.

Bring on another year! Proudly serving as UIU's President, I always look forward to being part of Team Peacock and raising money for our incredible University! I have rode RAGBRAI for eight years now and I continue to be amazed at the UIU connections that are everywhere. As I pedal across Iowa you wouldn't believe the number of alums I encounter and the countless Peacock fans who cheer for me along the way. My lovely wife, Sharon, and I love UIU and our peacock community. Go Peacocks!

UIU Cabby Dean's Fund: Sand Volleyball Courts
$681.60 raised / $600 goal

I am the Assistant Dean of Student Life at Upper Iowa University.  I love traveling, kayaking, being outdoors, RAGBRAI and spending time with friends and family. I'm an original member of Team Peacock with fourteen years of sweat and fun in the books.

I am dedicating my ride this year to the UIU Cabby Dean's Fund, aimed at incorporating a sand volleyball court on the south side of campus.  Physical elements of our campus are critical towards retaining students and we believe that there is no better investment in our campus than creating these activity outlets for students.  Several projects have recently been completed in campus recreation including a new recreation center floor and tracks as well as a renovated entrance thanks to Team Peacock donors and other generous donors.  This additional recreation area will be used by students, faculty, staff and community members. Please consider making a give – no amount is too small. Thank you for your consideration!

It’s an honor to be riding this year to support a student scholarship created by my good friend and former baseball teammate, Steve "Arnie" Arneson '00.  As a former student-athlete myself, I know what a difference this makes. I wholeheartedly want to do all I can to raise as much as possible toward this cause.

Thank you Arnie for starting this, you bleed blue. Together we will make a difference in future Peacocks.

Mary E. Kimball Scholarship
$487.85 raised / $450 goal

Angie says:  This will be my second ride with Team Peacock and I’m really looking forward to it.  As the UIU Alumni Association President it's a great opportunity to meet alumni along the ride and promote UIU to others. Also, as a native Iowan, it's a wonderful way to explore the state. I’m raising money for the Mary E. Kimball Scholarship to honor the memory of my mom.

TJ says:  This will be my first year riding with Team Peacock and I'm fundraising to provide money for the Mary E. Kimball Scholarship. Mary Kimball was my mother-in-law and this scholarship provides support to students pursing a degree in accounting and/or business. I'm looking forward to a great ride this year though Iowa.

Colonel Robert C. "Bob" King, USA, (Ret)
UIU Annual Fund
$500 raised / $500 goal

I am delighted to ride with Team Peacock. This is going to be a super experience. This is my 29th consecutive RAGBRAI "every mile and every hill" never sagged." I began riding RAGBRAI in 1991 at the urging of my two sons. "Hey, dad, let's do RAGBRAI. It'll be something we can do together." So we did. I've enjoyed riding with both of them together and individually. I continued to ride after they went on because it gave me an opportunity to explore my state. And then it became a way to meet new people and continue relationships with people I enjoyed riding with. My grandson Dawson was my wingman last year. It was a great experience for us both. So great in fact, that he's going to ride with me again this year!

I served in the Iowa Army National Guard for nearly 36 years in operations, training and leadership assignments. I was Headquarters Iowa National Guard Public Affairs Officer from 1989 until my military retirement in September 2004 and served as the headquarters commander for five years.

I continued in public service as a special projects officer for the Iowa Department of Public Defense and the governor’s office for the next nine years.

Governor Terry Branstad appointed me Executive Director, Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs and the director of the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in May 2013. I continued this assignment until my retirement in September 2016.

I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Upper Iowa University. I am a graduate of the United States Army Combined Arms Staff School and United States Army Command and General Staff College.

I was the 2004 Iowa Broadcast Association Hall of Fame inductee and was honored as the Upper Iowa University 2018 Service to Country Award recipient.

My hobbies are bicycling, traveling, landscaping and my extensive outdoor garden railroad collection. My wife Joy and I reside in Urbandale. We have five children and ten grandchildren.

Dawson King
UIU Annual Fund
$300 raised / $300 goal

Dawson King completed his first RAGBRAI in 2018. He rode hard and completed every mile and every hill. He and Grandpa Bobby had a great time and enjoyed riding together and visiting the towns and adventures along the route.

Dawson is an accomplished baseball player and excels catching, pitching, and playing shortstop. He also plays basketball and runs cross country. He will be an eighth grader in Fall 2019. He is an excellent student in the classroom and is interested in science, math and history and carries a high grade point. Dawson also plays the tenor saxophone in the middle school concert and jazz bands.

Dawson is looking forward to his second RAGBRAI and riding with Team Peacock and being Grandpa's wingman again.

UIU Mock Trial
$756.05 raised / $750 goal

As a veteran rider, I’m looking forward to another fun-filled adventure with Team Peacock.  UIU Mock Trial is in its second year and improving by leaps and bounds!  This year the team traveled to three invitational tournaments (one was snowed out thanks to the weather!) and the Regional Tournament in St. Paul.  The team had several “mentions” for witness and attorney roles, but one team member took home TWO outstanding attorney awards!  Each tournament consists of four trials over the course of a weekend beginning on Friday or Saturday.  The team practices with us coaches 2-3 nights per week from September until end of February.  The team also dedicates individual hours preparing and then spends entire weekends at tournaments.  We expect Mock Trial to take year THREE by storm!  It takes a lot of time, effort and money to travel to these invitational tournaments.  Hotels, transport, tournament fees and food all add up when traveling with anywhere from 13-15 people.  Considering donating to this great program and one that is making a name for itself in the mock trial world!!! Feathers UP!

Stivers Leadership Scholarship
$2,227.93 raised / $1,500 goal

We have been members of Team Peacock for thirteen years and enjoy the 400+ mile trek on our tandem. We are raising money for the Stivers Leadership Scholarship. We will donate $10 for every $50 donated toward our 2019 fundraising goal.

Louise Scott established the Stivers Leadership Scholarship in honor of her late parents for the influence they had on her life and her work with students of Upper Iowa University. We are raising money for this scholarship to honor Louise, and the impact she has had on UIU students and colleagues during her thirty dedicated years of service at UIU.

Louise began at UIU in 1985 as the associate dean of students and later served as director of career development. She then transitioned to the dean of student development before retiring in 2016. Louise continues to call Fayette her home and remains loyal to UIU and her community. There is no way to count the number of lives Louise impacted, but I am sure many students and colleagues have a Louise story to share.

We appreciate your support of the Stivers Leadership Scholarship and the annual impact this scholarship has on UIU students. Please help us to honor Louise Scott.
