Additional Program Costs
Textbook, Course Materials and Course Fees
Textbooks and course materials for athletic training courses average $300-400 per year depending on course load. Students are responsible for all associated laboratory and course fees. Course fees for athletic training courses include AT 144 Foundations of Athletic Training ($20) and AT 110 Emergency Care in Athletic Training ($20). Uniforms and Clothing
Students are provided a polo shirt to wear for events and clinical education rotations. Additional attire (e.g., dress slacks, dress jacket, khaki pants/shorts, etc.) will vary according to clinical assignments and will be the responsibility of the student.
An initial physical examination is required for application into the ATP. The exam may be obtained through Gundersen Clinics and is at no charge to the student. Exams must be scheduled through the Office of Student Development.
Students accepted into the ATP are required to provide documentation of the Hepatitis B vaccination series; Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccination; Varicella vaccination or proof of disease; Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis (DTap) vaccination; and Meningococcal vaccination prior to completing clinical experiences. Students are also required to show documentation of the influenza vaccination prior to November 1st of each year. Vaccinations may be obtained through Palmer Homecare Services – Community Health. Students are responsible for the cost of obtaining all required vaccinations. For information regarding vaccination rates, students may visit the Palmer Homecare Services – Community Health website.
Students completing clinical rotations at affiliated clinical sites may be required to obtain a Tuberculosis (TB) Test. Testing may be obtained through Palmer Homecare Services – Community Health. Testing requires two visits (1st visit to be injected with testing agent and 2nd visit must occur 2-3 days after 1st visit to assess injected area). Students are responsible for the cost of obtaining the Tuberculosis (TB) test. For information regarding TB test rates, students may visit the Palmer Homecare Services – Community Health website.
Travel to Off-Campus Clinical Sites
Students are responsible for obtaining transportation to and from assigned off-campus clinical sites.
Students may be required to obtain a criminal history check prior to participating in clinical experience at affiliated clinical sites. This background check is coordinated through the clinical experience site. Cost of the background check is $15 and is the responsibility of the student.
Emergency Cardiac Care
Students are required to maintain certification in emergency cardiac care throughout the program. Initial certification is incorporated into AT 110 Emergency Care in Athletic Training. Cost of the initial training fee and a CPR mask is included in the $20 course fee. Initial certification is valid for 2 years from the date of issuance. Recertification is offered by the athletic training program faculty. Cost of the recertification is $5 and is the responsibility of the student.
The program uses the ATrack database to track completion of competencies and proficiencies, as well as clinical education and directed observation hours. Subscription is free for students who are members of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). For non-members, a subscription to ATrack is $120 per year. Prospective students will be provided access to a modified version of ATrack for the first year free of charge.
Membership to the NATA is not required, but is strongly encouraged. Besides a free subscription to ATrack, students will have access to the NATA Career Center, the NATA News and the Journal of Athletic Training. Annual membership dues vary depending on state affiliation. Student dues for Iowa are $80 per year.
