Bill Duffy arrived at Upper Iowa University on March 1, 2009 and assumed the Senior Vice President position for the UIU Academic Extension. He came from the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM) where he was the Executive Director of Extended Campus and Continuing Education. While at UTM, Bill started up three off-campus centers, one of the largest dual credit programs in Tennessee (college courses offered to high school students), and was involved in numerous federal/state grants that generated approximately $10 million in external funding for UTM.
Bill was also a 20-year active duty infantry officer (retired in 1998), and his last military assignment was Professor of Military Science at UTM. He also served as the Deputy Joint Operations Officer for the United Nations Mission in Haiti, and coordinated the 1994 transition ceremony between the Multi-National Forces and United Nations Forces which involved President Clinton, President Aristide, Secret Service, FBI, and the international press.
While in Jackson, TN, Bill's passion was coaching high school varsity soccer. He was the head varsity Boys and Girls Soccer Coach at Jackson Christian High School, and he established both the Girls varsity (2000) and the Boys varsity (2004). Both teams were very successful, and the girls varsity team participated in four state playoffs their first eight years as a team with Duffy (he LOVED the JCS players and community!). Duffy also served as the West TN Field Representative for the US Military Academy and plans to soon do the same in Iowa. In 2005-2006, Bill served as the President of the Tennessee Alliance for Continuing Higher, a statewide organization comprised of approximately 60 higher education institutions, and 300 members involved in continuing higher education (credit and non-credit).
Bill has a BS in Engineering from the United States Military Academy, a Masters degree and an Education Specialist degree from Appalachian State University, and earned his Doctorate in Education degree from the University of Memphis. His "claim to fame" is that he and his three brothers (Matt, Mike, and Pat) were the only four brothers to ever attend a US military academy at the same time, graduate, and also retire (and they still are) after 20 (plus) years active duty in the Infantry, Engineer, Aviation, and Medical branches. Bill's greatest pride are his wife, Sharon (29 years as of April 26!), two daughters (Dawn and Maryann), and his four beautiful grandchildren (Ryan, Brilee, Madison, and Briana).
