"I went to Upper Iowa to major in Sports Communication. At the time, most of the schools I was looking at offered something similar but not as focused as UIU. I loved the campus and the people; and I knew I could work in the UIU Sports Information Department for four years to gain experience while receiving my degree. My time at Upper Iowa has most definitely launched me to a graduate assistant position at Western Illinois where I received my master's degree in sport management, to Louisiana-Monroe where I worked closely with the football program, which went to its first-ever bowl game, and now Wayne State. Without my four years at Upper Iowa, I would not have had the foundation on which to build."
Class of 2010
Sports Communication Major
Assistant Director of Media Relations at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan
The Sports Communication major provides the setting for students to explore the role of media in sports in our society and the relationship between sports media content and the audience. As communication professionals, students gain competence in print and broadcast writing, research, and general communication theory, as well as a background in sports law, administration, and marketing. Faculty help students gain an understanding of social media and ethical responsibility, both of which are imperative for the sports communication professions.
