2-Classes-Per-Term

Upper Iowa University (UIU) has a unique two-at-a-time class schedule that offers exceptional benefits. The schedule allows students to achieve more balance in their lives – an increased amount of time to focus on mastering each subject as well as more opportunity to experience college life to its fullest potential outside the classroom.

The two-at-a-time structure is similar to an American football game. The UIU academic year has four quarters. Each quarter, or term, is eight weeks long and students usually take two (maybe three) classes per term. The fall semester is composed of terms 1 and 2; the spring semester consists of terms 3 and 4. The spring semester also includes optional May interim classes, which are included in spring tuition. Students don't have to pay more for a May-term class, and they don't have to take a May-term class if they don't want to.

A typical first semester for a first-year student at Upper Iowa University is provided below.

  • Term I – End of August through the middle of October
  • Term 2 – Middle of October through the middle of December

Wellness meets four days a week for an hour per day and is a two-credit course. After eight weeks of classes and finals, the student has earned five credit hours and moves on to the next term and a new class schedule.

Term 2
The student will begin a whole new schedule. College Math meets 5 days a week for an hour each day and is a 3 credit course. Speech meets 4 days a week for an hour and fifteen minutes and is a 3 credit course. English meets 4 days a week for an hour and fifteen minutes and is a 3 credit course. The student will have this schedule for 8 weeks and then take finals in each class gaining a total of 9 credit hours.

Semester 1
In total, this student will gain 14 credit hours their first semester at college. The average, first-year, college student will take between 12 and 15 credits per semester. Upper Iowa students enroll in the same amount of credit hours as their peers at other institutions but will not have to balance 5 or 6 classes at a time. Instead they can place more energy and attention on the 2 or 3 classes they have per term. UIU truly believes student achieve higher results and comprehend more information in the two-at -a-time class schedule.

***Breaks
Students have a break from classes after each term. Fall break is between terms I & II and is typically five days off from class. Winter break is between terms II & III and is roughly four weeks long. Spring break falls in between terms III & IV and is a full week off of classes.
