1. What is my email address?
All Upper Iowa University faculty and staff have a unique email address. Your email address will contain your last name and first initial along with either an "@uiu.edu" extension for full time employment status, or in the case of adjunct faculty it will either be "@faculty.uiu.edu", or "@peacocks.uiu.edu." If you are not sure which has been assigned to you, you can either contact your immediate supervisor, or contact the IT Help Center at the information at the bottom of this page. This email is to be used whenever communicating with students.
EX 1 : peacockp@uiu.edu
EX 2 : peacockp@faculty.uiu.edu
EX 3 : peacockp@peacocks.uiu.edu
2. Why is there a difference in email address extensions?
If your email ends in @uiu.edu
Your email utilizes Microsoft Exchange Server technology for your email account. There are several advantages to using "Exchange" including; enhanced security features, email access from anywhere in the world, and greater efficiency regarding maintenance. This is only available to full time faculty and staff who have access to the UIU network. If you have this type of email, you can access it by either using Microsoft Outlook on your computer, or by Internet access by clicking here.
If your email ends in @faculty.uiu.edu or @peacocks.uiu.edu
Your email utilizes the web-based Microsoft Office 365 (formerly Outlook Live) system. UIU IT converted to this system during in December of 2012. Some reasons for the switch are; higher capacity and storage limits, access from anywhere, multiple email client configurations available, instant messaging through Outlook Web App, and stronger security. Click here to go to your Office 365 email.
3. What do I do if my mailbox is approaching the size limit?
The most common and efficient resolution is to archive your old emails. Please log in to our service ticket system to see the FAQ pertaining to this. If you have archived and still need additional storage, please contact the IT Help Center at the information listed below.
4. Can I send a blast email?
Faculty and Staff are permitted to this action although, please be courteous and respectful of your peers' time. Students are not permitted to send blast emails and must go through a faculty or staff member to send the email.
5. How do I block junk email and spam?
We can suggest using rules in Outlook to block spam. The rule can be used to block emails from certain individuals, and it can be set up to filter out all emails containing adult content.
Also there are some other practical suggestions to follow.
- When you receive spam, delete it.
- Never reply to spam.
- Avoid giving out your primary email address.
- In Outlook, you can create filters to automatically delete messages with certain subject lines.
6. What are the POP/SMTP settings for Office 365?
The Upper Iowa University IT Department does not recommend accessing email with a method other than the original client. It is therefore the end-users responsibility to research, verify, contact the sender with any issues regarding emails not received at a secondary client.
With that said, please go to the FAQ section of our service ticket system for the information, or contact us at the information below.
7. FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) provides strict procedures and rights regarding student data transfer. For more information please click here.
