'Peacock Proud: An Orientation for UIU Faculty & Staff' will be held Friday, May 10, at Liberal Arts Hall on the Fayette campus. This half-day program begins with registration at 8:00 a.m. in the lobby of Liberal Arts Hall. Welcome and introductions kick off at 8:30 a.m. The event ends with a lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Dr. John S. Yelvington, CPA, adjunct instructor for Upper Iowa University, was the principle author on a paper entitled, "Student Satisfaction with Online Intermediate Accounting Courses," which was recently accepted for publication in the International Journal of Education Research (IJER). The paper discusses the advantages of online learning, and measuring the effectiveness of online learning compared to traditional 'face-to-face' education. Co-authors were Danyell Weaver, Kaplan University; and Steven A. Morris, Middle Tennessee State University.
Mohammad Manzoor Murshed presented and published a paper at the International Conference on Computer Science and Computational Mathematics, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (ICCSCM 2013). The conference was held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in February (www.iccscm.com/cms/). The title of his paper was "Permutation Flowshop Scheduling with Hybrid Heuristic Algorithm". The scholarly work of Murshed, associate professor of management information systems, was well accepted by the audience and fellow scientists and was also published at the conference proceedings. This paper featured Murshed's current research on computer algorithm at the University of Iowa. Part of the research work was funded by the Upper Iowa University summer faculty stipend last year.
Center for Distance Education hires two. Stephanie Reffuge is the eLearning coordinator for the Center for Distance Education. She first joined UIU's Center for Distance Education in August 2008 and became an online undergraduate academic advisor in May 2009. She is responsible for online, hybrid and eCompanion enrollment processing, managing the daily activity report cycle and quality assurance oversight for online courses. Danielle Elsbernd has joined the Center for Distance Education as the education services specialist. She provides support for UIU's online instructors by assisting them with areas such as syllabus review and textbook ordering. She will be cross-trained to help with Independent Study program support.

Jeannie Barness recently assumed additional responsibilities for the Financial Aid department. Barness has worked in the Financial Aid department for over 16 years and was named the director of financial aid over a year ago. She is an Upper Iowa University alumna with a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's of public administration, and is an active member of the Iowa Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (IASFAA), and has held positions within the organization.
UIU-Des Moines Center welcomes new staff. Emily Swartz and Dane Sulentic recently joined Upper Iowa University's Des Moines Center as academic advisors. Swartz will advise students majoring in human services, psychology, criminal justice and public administration. Sulentic will be instrumental in establishing relationships with new students and business contacts.
UIU-Fort Riley Center welcomes a new office manager with the recent hiring of Carmela Jacobs. Jacobs worked for Barton Community College and Manhattan Area Technical College and has experience in financial aid and the education environment with military students.
UIU-Rockford welcomes a new center director in Rolanda Johnson '01. Johnson comes to UIU with extensive experience in higher education. In her previous position at Concordia University, she served as the center director of an off campus location working closely with adult students.
