Monster.com awards UIU student for leadership
Fayette, Iowa (October 4, 2006) – Upper Iowa University sophomore Lydell Moore received the Diversity Leadership Award at a seminar put on by Monster.com.at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. The three-day conference is designed to help college students develop life skills for success and explore future career opportunities with some of the nation’s leading companies.
Moore was awarded the Diversity Leadership Award, based on how well he worked with and led others during group activities and his ability to lead in diverse situations. “I earned team leader in every group I was a part of,” said Moore. “I made my way up to the highest leadership group and was then selected as the award winner.” He added, “The conference taught me that everyone has some sort of leadership skills and that there is a time to lead and a time to follow.”
PricewaterhouseCoopers was the premier sponsor, along with approximately 40 other companies such as Target, Lockheed Martin, QTG (Quaker, Tropicana and Gatorade), Centex, Enterprise, and the U.S. Navy. Each company had a representative on hand to talk to the students about possible future internship opportunities.
Moore joined over 300 other students from universities across the nation, including Harvard and Stanford, at the July 21-23 conference in Chicago. Nine such conferences took place in July and August, 2006. The criteria for selection included a submitted resume, as well as a student’s demonstrated leadership abilities, extracurricular activities, and GPA. Planned sessions during the two-day seminar focused on such things as leadership skills, interviewing tactics, development of people skills, and what is expected when one enters the job market.
Cardinal-Alliance in North Carolina has expressed an interest in Moore for a future internship, so he is keeping in close contact with the firm. Moore is currently majoring in biology at Upper Iowa with plans to go into the medical field.
