Two U.S. dignitaries to speak at UIU international graduations
FAYETTE, Iowa (November 20, 2007) - The December graduations at Upper Iowa University's (UIU) international centers in Hong Kong and Malaysia will feature two prominent dignitaries as keynote speakers--Anthony Hutchinson, director of public affairs at the U.S. Consul
ate General in Hong Kong and James Keith, U.S. ambassador to Malaysia. Both will speak on U.S. relations in regard to their respective entity, the importance of education in a global economy, and the strength of the American education system. "Upper Iowa University is honored to have Director Anthony Hutchinson and Ambassador James Keith to serve as our keynote speakers at graduation," said Dr. DeWayne Frazier, vice president for international programs at UIU. "Both men have experienced long and distinguished
careers in the United States Department of State and have been key advocates for improving United States relations in Asia." Over 200 students will receive their B.S. and M.B.A. degrees during the two ceremonies. UIU's Hong Kong graduation will take place Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m. in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Chiang Chen Theatre. The Malaysian graduation will be Sunday, Dec. 9 at 3:00 p.m. at the Impiana KLCC Hotel.
Both ceremonies will mirror the annual graduation ceremony held on Upper Iowa's Fayette campus in May, with a similar protocol that will include a procession, regalia, singing of the alma mater, honor cords, as well as other pomp and circumstance.
Frazier added, "Upper Iowa University looks forward to continued strong relationships with the Department of State and is continually looking at other avenues to collaborate as we expand our academic operations around the world."
UIU President Dr. Alan Walker will accompany Frazier for the trip overseas to attend the graduations, along with Dr. Nigel George, faculty representative; Don Aungst, vice president for business services; Chris Sanders, executive director of international programs; and Edwin Tan, director of Asian studies.
