Fayette native retires from UIU after 28 years
Banquet held to recognize faculty and staff
FAYETTE, Iowa (May 22, 2008)-Upper Iowa University (UIU) held its annual faculty and staff awards banquet Friday, May 9, to honor its employees for years of service, as well as professional and personal accomplishments.
In addition, long-time employee and Fayette resident Mary Langerman was recognized for 28 years with UIU; she will retire June 28. In a separate, informal presentation, Langerman was awarded a commemorative chair embossed with the University seal and her name.
"Ascending universities are built on the kind of effort and dedication for which our faculty and staff are recognized each year," said UIU President Dr. Alan Walker. "There is no greater personification of what it means ‘to be a Peacock' than you will find in Mary Langerman, who, in her 28 years of remarkable service to the University, has become one of its icons."
Langerman started at Upper Iowa as a switchboard operator, a position she held for ten years. Her daughter Carol Aten-Langerman recalls, "It wasn't unusual for mom to answer our home phone, ‘Upper Iowa University, may I help you?'" For the last 18 years of her career, Langerman has assisted UIU students in the University mailroom.
