Scholarships awarded to center and online students
FAYETTE, Iowa (March 18, 2009) - Twenty five Upper Iowa University students who take classes online or attend UIU centers in Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, and Wisconsin were recently awarded scholarships for academic achievement. The Diane Tvrdik Scholarship was awarded to Ellen Ramirez who attends the UIU-Des Moines Center. The late Diane Tvrdik was an Upper Iowa faculty member and friend of the University, who set up an annual scholarship to aid single mothers majoring in human resource management or education.
Two Military Spouse Scholarships went to Randolph Pridgen, Jr. enrolled in Upper Iowa's Online graduate program and Juliane Smith from the UIU-Fort Polk center. This annual scholarship is awarded to military spouses, who are committed to seeking higher education in addition to the other responsibilities they assume being married to military personnel.
The Academic Extension (EU) Scholarships, based on academic achievement and essay, were awarded to students from the following UIU center locations: Jill East (Ankeny); Shena Kohler, Julie Lawrence (Blackhawk); Tamera Stanek (Cedar Rapids); Tari Martin (DesMoines); Cherice Click (Fort Polk); Jennifer Bolton, Elizabeth Downs, Mary Keen, Joseph Lorenz, John Nault, Kelly Pallwitz, Sabrina Torgersen, Jean Vath, Mary Wajer (Online); Lorraine Mosley, Theresa Schmitt, Jill Thorpe (Waterloo); and Mark Graveen, Marnie Osterbrink, and Dwight Ruffi (Wausau).
"We are pleased to offer these scholarships to our students and grateful for the financial support that allows us to do so," said Dr. William Duffy, Senior Vice President, Academic Extension. "It is especially rewarding-to me and certainly to our student-to be able to recognize academic excellence in such a tangible way."
The number of EU scholarships awarded annually has increased significantly over the past four years, due in large part to Upper Iowa's annual Team Peacock scholarship fundraising effort during RAGBRAI.
The annual Honors and Awards Banquet for Fayette campus students will be held Saturday, April 4, at 6:00 p.m. in Garbee Hall on the Fayette campus. Upper Iowa awards approximately 80 merit-based scholarships at this event each year.
