UIU students bring home PBL national awards
FAYETTE, Iowa (June 30, 2008) -Members of the Upper Iowa University Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter earned several top awards at the National Leadership Conference held June 21-24 in Atlanta.
Criminology major Steven Kessler, Elkader, took 2nd place in Justice Administration and 10th in Sales Presentation categories. Marketing major Shane Kafka, Stewartville, MN., placed 3rd in Sports Management & Marketing. Accounting and Finance major Kellie Henniges, Oelwein, took 9th place in Financial Analysis & Decision Making.
According to chapter advisor and Associate Professor of Business\Division Chair Lynn Isvik, students earned the opportunity to attend the national conference by placing in competitive events at the state level. Four awards were earned this year, twice as many as in any of the previous eight years the school has competed.
"I find that most students who decide to become active in PBL are highly motivated, which can carry over into their classes and careers as well," said Isvik. "While it does take time and effort on my part, it's very rewarding to see the personal growth these students demonstrate."
Isvik accompanied the students, who joined nearly 2,000 delegates from the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to the competitive events, members participated in a structured, four-day meeting that included business and leadership training workshops, corporate tours, and the election of national officers.
The other five students who attended the national conference are Jennifer Holthaus, Ossian; Dani Dreeszen, Spirit Lake; Laura Durance, Monroe, MI.; and Shannon Stone and Dan Ellefson, both of Lansing.
