Students host two fundraisers for ASB trip to Belize
Fayette, IA (January 17, 2010) — Upper Iowa University students participating in the annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) community service trip will host two fundraising events. This year, 12 students will spend their spring break (March 6-13) traveling to Rancho Dolores, Belize, a developing country located in Central America.
The group will host the first fundraising event at the Pizza Ranch in Oelwein on Monday, Jan. 25 from 5:00-8 p.m. The Pizza Ranch will donate a percent of the evening’s profits to the students, plus tips.
The second fundraiser is the annual chili supper/cinnamon roll meal that precedes the UIU wrestling meet vs. Southwest Minnesota State on Friday, Jan. 29 from 5:00-7 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium on the Fayette campus.
The Peacocks are ranked #11 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll. Meal tickets cost $5 each and can be purchased at the door. The fundraiser meal is optional and separate from admission to the wrestling meet that starts at 7 p.m.
According to Daryl Grove, executive director of student leadership and adventure, the ASB mission is to promote critical thinking, social action, and continued community involvement by combining education and direct service on the local, regional and international level. “Our goals range from increasing cultural awareness to bringing academic learning to life and to create a life-long service ethic,” said Grove. While in Rancho Delores, they will help local citizens construct walls and fencing for their school.
Along with Grove, two UIU International Programs staff members, Kit Klepinger, coordinator for international education and Kristen Jorgenson, administrative assistant in international programs, will help chaperone the group. Upper Iowa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with St. John’s College in Belize in October, 2008.
The 12 students going on the trip include: Allison Franck, Cedar Rapids; Melissa Kipp, Ossian; Stephen Kluck, Cedar Falls; Nicole Lenius, Tripoli; Jason Olsgard, Decorah; Allison Rodenberg, McGregor; Kristine Whitsell, Grundy Center; Cara Mauldin, Belleville, IL; Tiffany Whitcher, Waterloo, IL; Paige DeVine, St. Charles, MN; Jacqueline Greco, St. Louis, MO; and Justin Marchant, Oregon, WI.
