Larger Upper Iowa booth big draw at the Iowa State Fair
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 28, 2009) -- Upper Iowa University was an even bigger presence at the 2009 Iowa State Fair due to its expanded booth, registration for multiple scholarship giveaways, and the ever-popular spin the wheel to win a free UIU-themed prize. Over 50,000 fair-goers visited UIU's booth, with approximately 350 alumni signing its guest book.
"Based on the number of colleges represented at the Iowa State Fair, it is an exceptional venue to promote higher education," said President Alan G. Walker. "This year, in particular, Upper Iowa was able to tout all the great things happening throughout the University, beginning with our $75 million capital improvement campaign on the Fayette campus." Volunteers from across the institution, including Walker, staffed the booth located in the Varied Industries Building.
Walker added, "We started offering a scholarship drawing our first year at the fair, and now offer four one-year tuition-free scholarships to our Fayette campus and daily course drawings to any of our center locations, online program, or independent study. With the economy just now starting to recover, students eagerly recognized this as an exceptional value and a great opportunity to jumpstart their academic journey."
The four names drawn to receive a one-year tuition-based scholarship to Upper Iowa University's Fayette campus are Gage Hasstedt, Ames, IA; Breann Lewellen, Des Moines, IA; Cody Lyman, Fairfield, IA; and Alex Shearer, Des Moines, IA.
Daily drawings for tuition for an undergraduate course good at any UIU center or program location include Stacy Doerhoff, Bondurant, IA (Aug. 13); Julie Klein, Harlan, IA (Aug. 14); Mindy Atkins, Kirksville, MO (Aug. 15); Lynn Thomas, Anamosa, IA (Aug. 16); Michael Daluga, Waukee, IA (Aug. 17); Nicole Jeffries, Melcerh, IA (Aug. 18); Angela Whitney, Des Moines, IA (Aug. 19); Angel McDonald, Des Moines, IA (Aug 20); Julie Schwenker, Wapello, IA (Aug 21); Tyler Christensen, Des Moines, IA (Aug 22), and Rachel Kephart, Riceville, KS (Aug. 23).
Upper Iowa also finished another successful RAGBRAI fund-raising effort in July. Team Peacock raised over $118,000 for student scholarships, bringing the five-year total to over $350,000. All UIU students are eligible to apply for these merit-based scholarships, which are awarded annually at a formal ceremony in the spring.
