Prints from five continents featured at UIU exhibit
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 18, 2009)--The work of more than three dozen printmakers from around the world will be showcased in an exhibit opening Thursday (August 20) in the Bing-Davis Memorial Galley, Edgar Fine Arts Hall, Upper Iowa University. The show features nearly 40 prints in two separate portfolios. Are You Looking at Me reflects on surveillance in an increasingly technological world while Time Sensitive explores the critical question of defining our place in time.
"It's rare that a campus this size is able to offer an exhibit with such a far reach," says John Siblik, UIU Associate Professor of Art and gallery director. "Printmakers from five continents give our students, members of the UIU community and other gallery visitors an unprecedented opportunity to experience a global interpretation of two important themes. Special thanks to Justin Diggle, Associate Professor of Printmaking at the University of Utah for assembling the portfolios."
The show continues through September 20. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Seventeen artists have contributed to the Are You Looking at Me portfolio. Their prints address both the positive and negative aspects of monitoring, which ranges from surveillance cameras at crosswalks and ATM machines to photography and recording devices on mobile phones to the ubiquitous nature of social networking sites like YouTube. With their work, these artists have attempted to answer questions about appropriate levels of monitoring, the effect of monitoring on individuals and how technology impacts our interactions with others on local and global levels.
Time Sensitive Materials includes the works of 20 artists from several continents grappling with questions like: What defines us? What are the most important issues of our time? How do artist reconcile the use of traditional materials and techniques with the advent of a myriad of imaging technologies available?
