UIU announces scholarship awardees at Iowa State Fair
Hugely successful booth draws record crowds
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 29, 2008) - Upper Iowa University set its own attendance records at the 2008 Iowa State Fair. More than 50,000 fair-goers stopped by UIU's booth to learn about the University, register for a free course or full-year scholarship drawing, or take a chance at spinning Upper Iowa's "wheel of fortune." The wheel provided opportunities to win UIU-themed prizes.
"Interest in our booth exceeded our expectations," said President Alan Walker. "We're grateful that so many stopped by for information on the life-long learning opportunities we offer." Volunteers from the institution, including Walker, staffed the booth located in the Varied Industries Building.
Due to the overwhelming response to its presence, Upper Iowa is looking into expanded booth space for the 2009 State Fair. "This was an incredible opportunity to meet people and share information about our school," Walker said. "I wouldn't have missed it."
Walker added, "More important, however, is the drawing for scholarships that will change the lives of four people by providing them with a remarkable gift of higher education."
The four names drawn to receive a one-year tuition-based scholarship to Upper Iowa University's Fayette campus are Jared Bird, Aurora; Stephen Larson, Dayton; Joshua Phillips, Van Meter, and Jeff Wittman, Des Moines.
Daily drawings for a single college-credit course good at any UIU center or program location include Jan Lehrkamp, Des Moines, IA (Aug. 7); Maggie Clatt, Indianola, IA (Aug. 8); Pamela Mercer, Ames, IA (Aug. 9); Matt Freidhof, Des Moines, IA (Aug. 10); Ineligible (Aug. 11); Kari Allen, Perry, IA (Aug. 12); Kim Heggen, Des Moines, IA (Aug. 13); Sarah Brumfield, West Des Moines, IA (Aug 14); Rogena Kephart, Des Moines, IA (Aug 15); Michael Sibert, Ankeny, IA (Aug 16); and Jeremy Cuttingham, Ellsworth, IA (Aug. 17).
The State Fair follows Upper Iowa's successful RAGBRAI fund-raising effort. A team of 30 faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and friends of the university made the week-long ride to raise money for student scholarships and enhance awareness of the institution. More than $100,000 was raised bringing the team's four-year total to over $250,000.
