Public invited to formal ceremony Sept. 21
FAYETTE, IA (August 29, 2006) – It’s been over two years since Upper Iowa University’s Green Goddess of “Peace” fell from its perch atop the cupola on Alexander-Dickman Hall on the Fayette campus.
The historical, aged-green copper statue was blown from the roof during a windstorm in March, 2004, breaking the head and several limbs. It was shipped to the McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratories in Ohio for repair, and upon its return last year has been decorating the lobby of UIU’s new Andres Center for Business and Education.
The statue is one of six goddesses originally installed in 1901 at the Black Hawk County Courthouse in Waterloo. In 1963, the six statues were removed from the courthouse before it was demolished to build a new one. That same year, Upper Iowa University leased the “Peace” statue for $1 and made her an icon on the Fayette campus.
Although many have expressed a preference to keeping the Green Goddess in the Andres lobby, mainly because one can appreciate its size and detail close-up, the plan has always been to return it to its original position on the roof of Alexander-Dickman.
The public is cordially invited to watch the re-installation of the Green Goddess during a formal ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served and tours offered of the newly-renovated Alexander-Dickman Hall.
