MESA, Ariz. -- (March 21, 2014) – The Upper Iowa University-Mesa Center will offer a new practicum/field experience program for all Arizona teachers serving children birth through kindergarten who need to complete the Early Childhood Education, Birth through Age 8 or through Grade 3 endorsement required by the state.
Arizona law requires all teachers to have the Early Childhood Education endorsement in order to teach kindergarten. The endorsement requires completion of four semester hours of experience in the field. UIU offers the four-hour field experience to teachers who already meet other educational standards.
"Many of the teachers in Arizona have the formal education, teaching experience, and teacher licensure but lack the four semester hours of field experience," said Dr. Gail Moorman Behrens, dean of the UIU Andres School of Education. "Upper Iowa University recognizes teachers' training and experience and can provide the field experience hours they need to add the Early Childhood Education endorsement to their teaching licenses. This program allows teachers to efficiently complete this final requirement and bring their skills into kindergarten classroom to benefit students."
The UIU ECE field experience can be completed by teachers anywhere in the state of Arizona, she added.
Upper Iowa University, which has its primary campus in Fayette, Iowa, opened its UIU-Mesa Center as part of the city's economic development initiative to expand educational opportunities in the area. "At UIU, we have been preparing teachers to educate generations of students for more than 150 years," Behrens added. "Our Mesa program carries the same accreditation with the same standards of quality as all other programs offered through the UIU School of Education."
