Upper Iowa University will host the folk group Las Guitarras de México at the Fayette Opera House September 20.
FAYETTE, Iowa (September 9, 2013) – Through the initiative of Upper Iowa University's School of Liberal Arts, the folk group Las Guitarras de México will be performing popular Mexican music in the Fayette Opera House Friday, September 20. The performance, free and open to the public, begins at 7:00 p.m. The opera house is located at the corner of Main and Clark Streets in Fayette.
For over 22 years, Las Guitarras de México has entertained groups large and small across the country, appearing in a wide range of venues—from classrooms to corporate gatherings, street festivals to international events, private homes to the Iowa State Fair. Endorsed by the Iowa Arts Council as an authentic, Hispanic culture-based performing group, the four-person all-string instrument group, led by R. J. Hernández, is listed in the Council's Folklife Resource Directory. They are recognized as the only authentic, traditional Mexican performers in central Iowa.
Dr. Roland Vazquez, UIU associate professor of anthropology, and his wife, Magdalena, who teaches Spanish at UIU, organized the Fayette concert, which is made possible by funding from the John and Honorine Falb performance grant and UIU's Office of Student Development. "This is a chance for people to come into contact with the fastest growing culture in the United States—including Iowa—precisely during the month that commemorates that culture," noted Vazquez. "But, it is also quite simply a chance to experience beautiful Mexican music in the wonderful venue of our Opera House."
