Upper Iowa University student, Mike Miklus, started his degree at the UIU-Des Moines center and finished online from his Rosemount, Minn., home. Miklus was one of six students selected to address the UIU Class of 2013 three commencement ceremonies May 11.
FAYETTE, Iowa (May 11, 2013) – Mike Miklus of Rosemount, Minn., was one of hundreds of graduates to cross the stage and receive his diploma at Upper Iowa University Saturday, May 11. What made his journey different was that he completed his degree online from the Iowa-based University after starting his UIU career at one of its off-campus education centers in Des Moines, Iowa.
Upper Iowa University has 19 U.S. off-campus education centers, a traditional residential campus in Fayette, international centers in Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as an extensive online program and an independent study program. About 2,000 students who completed their associate, bachelor or master degrees through these UIU offerings graduated in the UIU ceremonies. Of those, 700 graduated from the Fayette location, more than 1,000 completed their degree at a U.S. center, 500 graduated through online or independent study programs, and 250 were from the international centers. UIU is one of the most diverse universities in Iowa. In all, the graduates represented 36 states and 14 nations.
Miklus originally went to college immediately after high school on the west coast, but began to chase his dream of being a rock musician traveling between the coast and Iowa.
"During this time, life happened. I became a father, a husband, and worked full time in various management positions," Miklus told the UIU Class of 2013. "Throughout my professional career, I have surrounded myself with some of the best managers I know, all of whom have taught me the power of taking risk and embracing change. Risk is a tricky concept, and one that is needed for personal growth and development. It is also something that most leaders fear the most."
Miklus decided to take his own risks when he went back to college as an adult, first at the UIU-Des Moines Center and then as an online student from Rosemount, Minn., where is a manager for Centurylink. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in human resources management from UIU and will be entering graduate school at Texas A&M University.
"Always be prepared for change," Miklus added. "The world as we know it is becoming smaller and smaller as the need for conducting business international becomes reality. As more jobs are farmed out to developing nations, we all must adapt to the environment of lean operations and driving results in an efficient manner."
