Upper Iowa University is #7 for colleges with the most adult students
FAYETTE, Iowa (January 18, 2012) – Upper Iowa University is ranked 7th on the Top 10 list of colleges with the most students over age 25, which was recently released by U.S. News & World Report.
U.S. News takes individual data points from its annual survey of over 1,800 colleges and universities to periodically create "Short Lists" of colleges and universities based on just one aspect from the survey. These lists are separate from U.S. News overall rankings.
According to the Short List, 65% of the UIU student population is age 25 or older. Based on the official enrollment for the current academic year, that means UIU has more than 4,000 students over age 25 enrolled on its residential campus, at one of its 19 U.S. education centers, or in its distance education programs.
U.S. News notes that a number of factors can cause students to stray from the traditional academic trajectory. Some students enlist in the military; others take time off to travel or volunteer. However, tough economic conditions in recent years have also prompted students to go directly into the workforce, gaining valuable experience and building up their college savings before embarking on their undergraduate career. Others have worked for a number of years, but through career changes have elected to head to college in order to get a leg up in their chosen career field.
"Our focus as a university is to help students succeed," said Acting President Richard R. Patrick. "Whether through evening and weekend classes, online or independent study courses, Upper Iowa is committed to provide the avenues which best fits adult learners."
Additional universities named to the "Short List" for students over age 25 include Mid-Continent University, Ky.; Post University, Conn.; Cardinal Stritch University, Wis.; DeVry University, Ill.; Mountain State University, W.V.; Regis University, Colo.; Aquinas College, Tenn.; Albertus Magnus College, Conn.; and Notre Dame of Maryland University, Md.
