FAYETTE, Iowa (April 29, 2013) - Upper Iowa University will host its second annual oratorical competition Wednesday, May 1, at 7:00 p.m. in Ballrooms A and B at the Student Center. During this oral presentation, seven Upper Iowa students will compete against each other. Each has prepared an abstract and presentation on the topic of prevention, research and/or education in one of three areas – sexual misconduct, domestic violence or abusive relationships. The community is invited to this event.
The topics of relationship violence and sexual misconduct are timely as Upper Iowa University recognized April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This competition will be the final event in a month-long education initiative spearheaded by UIU's Office of Student Development.
Competing are UIU- Fayette campus students Amy Doeppke from Elkader, Iowa; Samuel Vivas Imparato from Valencia, Venezuela; Tiffany Stouffer from Jewell, Iowa; Austin Schnabel from Sheffield, Iowa; Adriana Chase from Lansing, Iowa; and Paul Dupeyrat from Aix-en-Provence, France; and UIU-Madison Center student Kristin Schneider from Reeseville, Wis.
The oratorical competition was a project coordinated by Courtney Thompson, UIU assistant director of residence life/coordinator of educational initiatives and intern Angelina Chanis, a senior double-major in marketing and communications from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In order to be considered for competition, contestants needed to have submitted an abstract detailing their research and the points to be covered in their oral delivery. Judging and critiquing the event are Dr. Katrina Farren-Eller, assistant professor of English; Dr. Brian McQueen, assistant professor of sociology and criminology/criminal justice; Dr. Ryan McGeough, assistant professor of communication; Dr. Melissa Maier, assistant professor of communication; and Dr. Oliver Evans, interim chief academic officer and senior vice president.
Prizes include a Kindle HD device and a free textbook to be redeemed in the fall semester for first place; a $200 gift card and free textbook for second place; and $100 gift card and free textbook for third place.
