UIU Homecoming is September 27-19
FAYETTE, Iowa (September 14, 2012) – Upper Iowa University will celebrate Homecoming 2012 in style with a wide range of activities. There is something for everyone with this year's celebration. UIU is the place where everyone is "Building a Future; Constructing a Memory. The classes of 1942, 1952, 1962, 1972 and 1987 are this year's honorees.
Kicking off Homecoming is a 155th Anniversary reception in the Liberal Arts Building atrium, hosted by President Alan G. Walker and the UIU Board of Trustees. The reception is Wednesday, September 26, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Come and celebrate 155 years of excellence at Upper Iowa University!
Homecoming fun starts Friday, September 28. The Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery in Edgar Fine Arts will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. featuring a collection of works from 31 Belize artists curated by Yasser Musa. A reception and gathering will be held Saturday, September 29, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The gallery is open that day, as well, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
A four-person, best-shot golf tournament for alumni and friends is scheduled for Friday at Big Rock Country Club, Fayette, Iowa, with registration at 9:30 a.m. and tee-off at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call 563-425-5388.
Department open houses will be conducted throughout campus from 1:00-4:00 p.m., as well as an alumni check-in and gathering from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the Student Center. All UIU alumni will receive a free commemorative Homecoming button and other items welcoming them back to campus. A second alumni gathering will be held Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Student Center.
A student project showcase for the Division of Science and Mathematics will be conducted in Baker-Hebron Hall from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Highlighting the Homecoming weekend are two special demonstration/workshops. The first is "Simply Saucy," a demonstration provided by the ARAMARK Servery in the Commons at the Student Center, which will feature ways to spice up sauces for mealtime, as well as discuss the pairing of wines with sauces to enhance a meal. The second workshop will be conducted from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Student Center by Scott Lebin, UIU alumnus and Board of Trustee Member. He will discuss "21 Ways to Shoot Better Photographs."
The Athletic Hall of Fame banquet will be held Friday in the Student Center Ballroom. Social time is 5:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 6:00 p.m. This year's Hall of Fame inductees include Jackie Bridges '93 (football); Matt Cowley '00 (baseball); Jarrad Jones '00 (baseball); Marty McKowen '83 (coach); Sigmund Sanders '96 (basketball); Cliff Thompson '02 (wrestling); and Wade Whitcher '02 (baseball). Following the Hall of Fame banquet is the bonfire, pep rally and coronation of the Homecoming 2012 king and queen. This event will take place east of the Student Center.
Capping off the night's events is a women's volleyball matchup against the University of Minnesota-Crookston in Dorman Gym beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday's events kick off with a Homecoming breakfast hosted by the Peacock Athletic Fund in the Student Center. It begins at 8:30 p.m. and by reservation only. To make reservations, contact UIU Alumni at alumni@uiu.edu.
The Homecoming parade begins at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Fayette. A tailgate picnic will be held at Harms-Eischeid Stadium from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the big event – the UIU Peacocks host Winona State with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The women's volleyball team hosts Bemidji State University at 3:00 p.m. in Dorman Gym.
An Alumni social and banquet will conclude the Homecoming events Saturday evening beginning at 5:30 for the social time and dinner at 6:30.
Campus tours will be conducted Friday and Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. gathering at the Student Center.
