Upper Iowa University recognized for commitment to going "green"
Seven Iowa organizations receive Excellence in Energy Efficiency Awards
WEST UNION, IOWA – April 17, 2012 – Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, recognizes Upper Iowa University (UIU) for its commitment to using energy efficiently and being green.
UIU was honored with a 2011 Excellence in Energy Efficiency Award for its leadership and vision in integrating energy efficiency in to the design, construction, or operation of their business. The university accepted this award today at the 2012 Iowa Energy Summit, held in Cedar Rapids.
"At Upper Iowa University, we are committed to the vision of helping our students develop into responsible global citizens," said Dr. Alan G. Walker, President of Upper Iowa University. "We are pleased by the cost savings but even more pleased that we are reducing our impact on the environment."
Upper Iowa University (UIU) recently completed two Commercial New Construction projects on the Fayette campus, the Liberal Arts Building and the Student Center. When students spend four years at college, the campus becomes their home away from home. The new 65,000 square foot UIU Student Center was designed with that thought in mind for the students and energy efficiency was built in from the beginning, too. This new building will save 870,508 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in energy each year over standard building code guidelines, which translates into a savings of $70,524 annually.
The 34,000 square foot new Liberal Arts Building was built to LEED® certified specifications, for a totally "green" building. The estimated energy savings over standard construction is 572,308 kWh or $49,266 annually.
"Energy efficiency addresses both energy cost concerns and our environment," said Tom Aller, President of IPL. "We're recognizing UIU for the impact and leadership shown."
Alliant Energy awarded the 2011 Excellence in Energy Efficiency Awards to its commercial and industrial customers who underwent energy efficiency initiatives that yielded the highest cost and energy-savings. The 2012 Energy Summit provided attendees with a variety of energy-related educational sessions, technical information and energy solutions.
