UIU celebrates Black History Month 2011
FAYETTE, Iowa (February 1, 2011) - In honor of Black History Month 2011 and to underscore Upper Iowa University’s commitment to diversity, the UIU website is featuring a special tribute to UIU’s African-American students at www.uiu.edu/diversity.
Since 1976, American has celebrated Black History Month in February to help celebrate Africa-American culture and history. Canada also celebrates Black History Month in February, while the United Kingdom celebrates same in October of each year.
“It wasn’t too many years ago that minorities didn’t have the right to go to any type of school,” says freshman Christopher Dickinson from the UIU-Milwaukee Center. “I’m very grateful to these determined men and women who not only fought for this right but many other freedoms. The opportunity to further myself academically is something I very much appreciate — a right that I don’t take lightly!"
Read more student bios on the UIU website, which also includes a list of student events planned for the month on the Fayette campus. The website also provides a comprehensive list of African-American books available to everyone in the UIU Library—fiction, literature, poetry, nonfiction, reference materials, and videos. Additionally, the website displays clips from the UIU Martin Luther King Day program held on the Fayette campus on Monday, Jan. 17, with excerpts by guest speaker Dr. J. Jackson, President Alan G. Walker, and UIU student singers and readers. The website also includes a blog by Dr. Adriel Hilton, executive assistant to the president and chief diversity officer, and Melissa Harrell Robinson, admissions advisor for the UIU Education Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
