UIU announces competition for full-tuition scholarships
Students of Excellence Scholarship available to freshmen at Fayette campus
FAYETTE, Iowa (December 16, 2011) -- Upper Iowa University (UIU) will host a scholarship competition on Saturday, February 18, in the UIU Student Center to award several full-tuition scholarships to incoming freshmen at the Fayette campus. The scholarships are eligible for renewal for up to four years. A snow date has been set for February 25.
"The Students of Excellence Scholarship was created to recognize the best students among the members of each year's incoming freshman class at Fayette," said UIU President Alan G. Walker. "This scholarship will be awarded based on a student's academic criteria, college entrance exams, and a competition that includes both a timed essay and an interview. We expect the value of the award and the prestige of being recognized as a 'Student of Excellence' will generate a great deal of interest. The faculty and staff are looking forward to welcoming these students."
Jobyna Johnston, UIU vice president for admission and financial aid, added that the competition is expected to become an annual event that will bring future student leaders to campus. "At other universities where similar competitive scholarships are in place, the institution benefits from the scholarship as much as the student," he explained. "Students who earn the University's highest academic scholarship generally become leaders in the classroom and on campus throughout their college careers."
"The creation of this prestigious scholarship opportunity for outstanding students is part of the ongoing transformation of Upper Iowa University as an ascending institution," said Melik Peter Khoury, senior vice president. "The University is not only transforming its facilities and organizational structure to better serve students, it is aggressively pursuing ways to provide affordable, high quality educational programs and to bring in students who are focused on achieving academic and personal success."
The Upper Iowa University Students of Excellence Scholarship competition day is by invitation only for students who have earned a 3.5 grade point average in high school and a minimum of a 26 on the ACT. Students must be accepted as UIU freshmen to begin college in Fall 2012. Students who believe they meet the criteria should contact the UIU Admissions Office at admission@uiu.edu to request an invitation to the all-day competition.
To be selected for the scholarship, students must attend the entire competition day, write a timed essay and be interviewed by a panel of students, faculty and staff.
The renewable scholarship is valued at the amount of freshman on-campus tuition in the award year. For the incoming class of 2012, the estimated value is $96,000 if renewed for all four years.
