FAYETTE, Iowa (December 9, 2011) -- Frank Meuschke's "Intimate Distance" exhibit will be presented in the Upper Iowa University Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery as the first exhibit of 2012. The opening reception will be held on January 12 from 3:30 to 5 pm, which will include a lecture by the artist. The exhibit will be on display through February 17.
"In this exhibition, I present several years of work compressed into a few groups," Meuschke said. "All deal with painted light and atmosphere, the development of deep and ambiguous spaces, and representation. Over the last several years, I have been creating paintings of locations that I have experienced or desired to know intimately -- landscapes that I am tied to by virtue of home, employment, regular travel, or family. Although I deal with representation of actual places, my paintings are not scenes, but presentations of experiences of awe and intimacy, proximity and distance."
"Each painting is informed by a particular landscape, quality of light and shadow, color, and sensations derived from the experience of the actual place," he added. "However, my painting is never bound by objectivity, as the painting is its own place where new things must happen."
Meuschke attended the foundation program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and then attended the State University of New York, College at New Paltz (painting), where he received his bachelor's degree in fine art. Studying painting and landscape design, he earned his masters of fine arts at New Mexico University. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His works have been featured in a variety of exhibits, primarily in New York and the Southwest.
