Upper Iowa University receives award for innovative flooring in Student Center

FAYETTE, Iowa (December 9, 2011) – The 2011 Excellence in Concrete (EIC) Award was given to Upper Iowa University (UIU) for the concrete flooring in the UIU Student Center, one of the buildings constructed as part of Phase 1 of UIU’s capital improvements made on the Fayette campus.
According to Bryan Jolley, executive director of facilities management and services, the first floor of the Student Center is slab on grade surrounded by a geothermal heating system. Different colors of concrete stains with a burnished shine were used to break up the large area of space in the Commons area. The concrete flooring on the second level provides a critical structural member, allowing for a large amount of the exterior walls to be constructed of glass.
“This was a flooring choice that we made from the very beginning,” added Jolley. “It is attractive, easy to maintain, and a cost-saving option.”
The EIC Awards are presented by the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association, recognizing outstanding projects from throughout the state. Entries were judged on the following criteria: architectural consideration of concrete, complexity of project, engineering design, finished appearance, and diverse application of ready mixed concrete.
