UIU to award scholarships, free courses during Iowa State Fair
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 3, 2011) —Upper Iowa University (UIU) will be awarding 15 lucky students with scholarships or free courses during the Iowa State Fair Aug. 11-21.
Visitors to the UIU booth in the Varied Industries Building on the Fairgrounds in Des Moines will be able to enter their name in drawings to win a one-year tuition scholarship to attend UIU at the Fayette campus or to take a free UIU course online, as independent study or at a UIU education center. Four one-year tuition scholarships to the residential campus will be awarded about 1 p.m. on the last day of the Fair, August 21, and drawings will be held about 9 p.m. each day to award a total of 11 free UIU courses that can be taken at one of 16 UIU centers in the United States or through the Center for Distance Education..
“We are pleased to return to the Iowa State Fair with this exceptional opportunity for students,” said UIU President Alan G. Walker. “At UIU, we are committed to finding ways to make college more accessible to students by making it more affordable. Through endeavors like Team Peacock, which has participated in RAGBRAI for seven years and raised more than a million dollars for scholarships, and through opportunities like the scholarship giveaways at the State Fair, we have stepped up to ensure that UIU students graduate with less debt than most of their peers from other Iowa colleges.”
Walker and other UIU volunteers will staff the UIU booth at the fair, visiting with alumni and providing information about UIU. The booth, #762 in the Varied Industries Building across from the Grandstand, will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the Fair. The UIU mascot, Pete the Peacock, will also be on hand from 3-4 p.m. Friday through Sunday during both weekends of the Fair.
