Upper Iowa University receives two American Legion scholarships

Ivan Torkelson and Dr. Rudy Kraus, representatives of local American Legion posts in Elgin and Fayette, respectively, presented Upper Iowa University President Alan G. Walker with two $1,000 scholarships from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation on Monday, August 23.
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 25, 2010) —Ivan Torkelson and Dr. Rudy Kraus, representatives of local American Legion posts in Elgin and Fayette, respectively, presented Upper Iowa University President Alan G. Walker with two $1,000 scholarships from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation (ALIF) on Monday, August 23.
“Having come from a military family, it is with honor that I accept these two significant scholarship awards intended to help deserving Upper Iowa University students, who are a veteran, spouse, or child of a veteran, graduate with less debt,” said Walker. “We are proud of our commitment to our military students by making higher education available to them anywhere, at anytime.”
In 2009, the ALIF provided over $87,000 in cash awards to veteran rehabilitation, community service, and youth programs in the state of Iowa. Established in 1978, the ALIF has accumulated a total permanent endowment fund of over $1,861,301 to better human life through scholarships and other humanitarian causes.
According to G.I. Jobs magazine, Upper Iowa University has been ranked in the top 15 percent of Military Friendly Schools in 2010 and 2011; was one of sixty colleges receiving the designation of “Top Military Friendly School” by Military Advanced Education magazine in 2008 and 2009; and is a proud member of the Yellow Ribbon Program and numerous other higher education veteran benefit programs.
