UIU hosts art exhibit on “Transcending the Figure” from Aug. 26-Oct. 1

“Roller Girl” is one of the featured images in an exhibit about “Transcending the Figure” that opens at the Bing-Davis Memorial Gallery August 26 on the Upper Iowa University campus.
FAYETTE, Iowa (August 11, 2010) — The Bing-Davis Memorial Galley at Upper Iowa University will host the exhibit, “Transcending the Figure: curated by the Moberg Gallery” of Des Moines, Iowa, from August 26-October 1.
The Moberg Gallery, one of the premier art galleries in Iowa, opened in 2003 and represents more than 30 regional and national artists, working in different media and styles.
“Throughout the history of art, the human figure has continued to preoccupy artists,” said Elissa Cox, UIU assistant professor of art and gallery coordinator. “The figure becomes the heart of the artists’ working approach and often depicts a unique form of mankind and the knowledge of human mental and physical shapes.”
The exhibit includes a collection of works by contemporary artists from across the nation, ranging from the photo realistic paintings by Larrissa Kabel (Iowa), to the fragmented, seductive “body as landscape” installations by Tracy Duran (Las Vegas, Nev.). The show will also feature works by Catherine Dreiss, Jeffery Thompson, Frank Hansen, John Phillip Davis, Ignatius Widiapradja, Chris Vance and Anthony Pontius
“Transcending the Figure: curated by the Moberg Gallery” will open at UIU with a reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m. August 26. The Bing- Davis Memorial Gallery, located in Edgar Fine Arts Hall, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
