Nearly 400 from Upper Iowa University dive into community service day projects

FAYETTE, Iowa (April 23, 2010)—Nearly 400 Upper Iowa University students, staff and faculty spent Wednesday morning, April 21, working on service projects in the Fayette area during the annual Fayette Appreciation Day.
Organizer Daryl Grove, UIU executive director of student leadership and adventure, said the volunteers completed 18 planned service projects and also cleaned up three additional sites during the morning-long event. Projects included citywide trash/debris cleanup, painting, maintenance and gardening for a variety of Fayette businesses and organizations, as well as building a Peacock Challenge Course/trail near the UIU practice fields, conducting a food drive, and collecting and properly disposing of old computers.
“We thank everyone in the University community for coming out to help with the projects, and we look forward to this same turnout next year,” Grove said. “This annual event continues to be an excellent opportunity for students to learn and practice civic responsibility, and they have never failed respond to our call for volunteers, to work with enthusiasm, and to enjoy the activities of Fayette Appreciation Day.”
