According to project organizer, Executive Director of Student Leadership and Adventure Daryl Grove, "We started community cleanup two years ago in honor of the University's 150th anniversary as a way to show our appreciation to the city of Fayette. The day turned out to be so gratifying for everyone involved that the students have committed to helping annually."
The day began at 8:00 a.m. with a repeat of some of the same projects as last year, such as general city-wide trash pickup and yard work, cleanup and field repair to Cardinal Park, painting Fayette Lumber, and cleanup of the Volga River and nearby walking trail. A number of new projects were also added, such as a special path cleanup from the AmericInn down to the new walking trail; painting on Main Street, and sprucing up the UIU baseball field.
Four local businesses committed to help sponsor the event through monetary donations, materials or food. Sponsors included First State Bank of Fayette; Fayette Lumber; Diamond Vogel in Mason City and Sodexo Food Services, Fayette.
