Independent Study Program
The Upper Iowa University Program offers 14 majors in post-secondary degree programs to learners worldwide as well as five certificate programs.
The Upper Iowa Independent Study Program started in 1973 as one of the first of its kind in the nation. The program, modeled after traditional correspondence learning, is a paper/email based program specifically designed to make learning as flexible as possible. More than 100 courses are available, and you can take up to six months to complete the course.
Using texts, study guides, and other course materials, you will learn by completing specific lessons and assignments. Coursework and communication are delivered via mail or email and you work at your own pace with your instructors using email, mail, or fax.
We work closely with all services to offer military education programs that provide the flexibility needed by today’s military personnel. Several companies also have educational agreements with UIU through the Corporate Advantage Program. Their employees enjoy benefits, including tuition discounts.
Would you be a successful distance learning student? Independent study courses offer students opportunities to learn in new ways and makes learning available to many who cannot attend a traditional class. However, independent study courses are not for everybody, just as not every student is successful in traditional college classes. To be successful, students who study at a distance should be able to:
- Practice time management
- Write well
- Think critically
- Participate actively
