UIU alumna Teri (Vanderheiden) Salmons (right) accepts the
UIU Alumni Award for Professional Accomplishment.
Teri Salmons - Class of 1976
UIU Alumni Award for Professional Accomplishment
Teri graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1976 with her degree in education. Her time spent in the classroom is not measured by the number of years or the number of students, but by the impact she has had on those she teaches. While teaching third grade at Rockburn Elementary in Eldridge, Maryland, Teri was honored by the Washington Post Company Educational Foundation as the Howard County Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 2007. An article for the award appeared in the Washington Post detailing the care and creativity Teri has woven into her teaching. Parents, students and colleagues attest to her compassion, patience and sense of magic. Described as firm and kind, she works with every child, regardless of ability. Her gift is finding each child's inner strength. Teri tries to stay in tune with what excites children and gives them the confidence to try new things and go new places.
