LEE EMMA RUNNING, Grinnell, IA, holds an MFA from the University of Iowa 2005, and a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1999 and is currently a professor of art at Grinnell College. Nature and its ephemeral nature inspire the art of Lee Emma Running. She uses the simple tools of projections, tracing, stenciling and cutting to identify and expand the characteristics of biological ephemera. Lee utilizes both close handwork and digital manipulation to inspect found detritus like a twist of animal hair, a network of leaf veins or a cluster of roots. Transforming the scale of these bits of nature reveals their intricate networks, and identifies the universal nature inherent within them.
